TONLE SAP LAKE Conserving Cambodia’s fish factory Southeast Asia’s largest lake, Cambodia’s Tonle Sap more than quadruples in size during the monsoon season, flushing the region with water and life. The Tonle Sap supports one of the world’s most productive freshwater fisheries which provides around 300,000 to 500,000 tons of fish each year and half of the nation’s animal protein needs. The lake is home to more than 1.5 million people, many of whom live in floating villages on the lake. Here, more than 90% directly rely on the seasonally flooded forests for fresh water, food, fuelwood and other essential resources. A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the lake contains three Ramsar sites and provides habitat for a range of globally threatened and migratory species. The lake’s flooded forests play an。
